Murshidabad was the last capital of undevided Bengal during the Mughal era and was named after then Nawab Murshid Quli Khan, the then ruler of unified Bengal, Bihar and Orissa. Situated at the banks of the Bhagirathi, the city of many splendours, this place was particularly famous for its silk. Even after the historic battle between the then Nawab Siraj-Ud-Daula and the East India Company in 1757, the status of the capital was maintained by the British till 1773 when the capital was shifted to Calcutta.
